"To the Reverend and much honoured the Deane and Chapter of the Cathedrall . . . of Salisbury", from Sir George Chudleigh (c 1578-1658) and three others including Sampson Hele (1582-1655). The signatories were apparently commissioners appointed to investigate a dispute between a Mr Gilberd, tenant of the Dean and Chapter's rectory at West Alvington, near Kingsbridge, Devon and a Mr Prestwood, of Totnes, the holder of property under "fee farm" from the King. A note below the main body of the letter refers to "the boundary which we have verified", referring to "Marydole", presumably the village of Malborough, also "called by the name of Marrydole" in the parish of Alvington, between Kingsbridge and Salcombe, mentioned in a 1621 letter from Gilberd (CH/20/53/1).
