Description

A letter addressed from Lambeth and signed "G:Cant" (George Abbot, 1562-1633; Archbishop of Canterbury, 1611-1633) and "R:Dunelm" (Richard Neile, 1562-1640; Bishop of Durham, 1617-1627) addressed "To our very Loving freinds Mr Doctor Bowle Dean of Sarum and the rest of the Chapter". Given "some difference betwixt . . . Dean and Chapter, and Doctor Dee and Mr Henchman" it is "fitt that you, or some authorized from you, doe come up . . . to attend". Dr Dee and Mr Henchman should have, "as farr forth as your Statutes will permit", "sight and perusalll of such Books and Orders" as relate to "Matters now in question". Dean and Chapter should "bring up unto us such Books and other Statutes which may give light and information". "Wee do appoint the 10th of Aprill . . . about two of the clock in the after noone . . . at Lambeth". According to a later document (CH/20/54/3) the "difference" related to some unspeciified "right of Residence". Francis Dee was Canon Chancellor and later Dean of Chichester (1630-1634) and Bishop of Peterborough (1634-1638); Humphrey Henchman was a Canon who would later become Bishop of Salisbury (1660-1663) and of London (1663-1675).
