Description

Legal Opinion of William Lenthall (1591-1662), called to the Bar at Lincon's Inn in 1616, to William Osborne, Prebendary of Chardstock (1613-1646) and Canon Residentiary. "To the right worshipful my very worthy friend Mr Doctor Osborne". "I have received your Case and will give you the best advice I can in this Case that concerns the Church". Lacking the details of the "Case" as submitted to Lenthall, the context is not clear. The Opinion states that "the vicar ought to pay the 12 marks to the Church". The "vicar" in question is not named. (William Lenthall was the Speaker of the House of Commons in 1642 when Charles I entered the Chamber seeking to arrest five Members of Parliament he accused of treason. Lenthal defied the King with the words "I have neither eyes to see nor tongue to speak in this place but as this House is pleased to direct me").
