Certified copies of two letters: 1. Dated 31 July 1549. Signed "your loving friend" by Edward Seymour, who, from 1547 to 1549, served as Lord Protector of England during the minority of his nephew, Edward VI. The mint at Bristol is "destitute of Bullion"; Salisbury Cathedral possesses plate to the value of 2,000 marks, which it is asked to deliver urgently to Robert Recorde, Controller of the Mint. 2. Dated 7 August 1549. Addressed to "Our very good Lord the Bishop of Salisbury and to our Loving friends the Dean and Chapter". Apparently the receipt for the plate. Signed "Robert Recorde". Robert Recorde (c 1512-1558) was Controller of the Royal Mint in Bristol ("Comptroller of the Kynges Majesties Mynte in Bristoll") in the reign of Edward VI (1547-1553).
