Description

Decree in Latin relating to the Vicars Choral. It safeguards their rights over a house, garden and orchard adjoining a tenement called [Hayles?] Inn. Signed by: John Coldwell, Bishop 1591-1596 Ralph Pickover, Archdeacon of Sarum and Canon Residentiary, 1583-1615 Thomas [Gyde?] John Colcell, Canon Residentiary 1566-1599 William Souch, Precentor 1589-1608 John Bolde, Canon Residentiary 1589-1602 Abraham Conham, Prebendary 1584-1613. Countersigned by [Willms?] Smegergill, Procurator Vicariorum, and a number of (presumably) Vicars Choral. John Farrant (1575-1618), son of another John Farrant (organist 1578-1592) and a chorister since 1585, who was admitted as a vicar-choral and as organist in 1600, is stated to have "consented to this article the 25 of June 1605". With a transcript by Penelope Rundle, Archive Volunteer, llate 2010s. An annotation on the back of the document in a later hand reads: "Original Decree of Bp D & Cap relating to the Vicars Choral 25 May 1596 25 May 1848 Eheu fugaces labuntur anni [Alas the fleeting years slip away] A.C."
