Description

Letter signed by Elizabeth I addressed "To the right reverent father in God Bishoppe of Sarum, and to our trusty and wellbeloved the Dean and Chapter of the same Sea". The Queen urges the Bishop, Dean and Chapter to grant "a better Estate" in Sherborne to Sir Walter Raleigh (c 1552-1618), then Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard (1597-1603). In 1592, Raleigh had been granted a lease on Sherborne Old Castle, the twelfth century palace of Roger of Salisbury (d 1139; Bishop of Salisbury, 1102-1139), where, in 1594, he built Sherborne Lodge, later to be extended as Sherborne Castle. One small hole in the paper, not affecting the text. With a transcript by Penelope Rundle, Archive Volunteer, late 2010s.
