Letter from Elizabeth I about the appointment of William Bradbridge

Letter headed "By the Quene". The salutation and date have been eroded. The identity of the addressee(s) is unclear - probably the Bishop (John Jewel, Bishop 1559-1571) and Chapter. The surviving, legible portion begins "we understand the Deanery of Sarum is now voyde", and continues, "We lett you therefore to understande, That we have appoynted for the same, in consideration of his vertues and honest qualities, oure trustie and wellbeloved Willyam Bradbridge, Bachelor in Dyvinytie". William Bradbridge (1501-1578) was a Canon Residentiary (1561-1571) and Dean (1563-1571). He was elected Bishop of Exeter in 1571. The letter is damaged and has been restored by mounting on modern paper.
