Description

A list of references to and/or extracts from various historical documents citing the title of the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury to the tithes, wood and deer of the Royal Forest. In addition to the title, there is a heading, "Instructions to prove the title of the Deane and Chapiter of Sarum to the tithe woodes and deare in the forest of Panncett". Reference is made in the document to other named forests, including Buckholt, Andover, Wilton, Dean and Savernake. Whether called Panncett, Pancet, Pauncett, Pannset, Penchet, or another variant, the forest principally referred to formed part of the northern extension of the New Forest (originally proclaimed a Royal Forest by William I in about 1079), which, according to the Victoria County History comprised "the Forests of Clarendon or Penchet, and Melchet, and Buckholt", all generally referred to as the Forest of Clarendon, extending through south-east Wiltshire and into Hampshire. This document cites authorities from the reigns of Henry I (1100-1135) and Edward III (1327-1377) and refers to other sources dating from 1410, 1451, 1469 and 1470.
