Description

Letter from John Whitgift (1530-1604; Archbishop of Canterbury 1583-1604) addressed "To my loving frendes the Dean and Chapitre, and all other the Prebendaries as well Residentiaries as non- Residentiaries of the cathedral church of Sarum." The Archbishop states that "by an auncient Statute" Prebendaries are "no lesse liable for all Contributions . . . to maynteyne Hospitalitie" than Residentiaries. Signed "Your verie Loving Friend Jo: Cantuar". With a contemporary copy or draft. Under the signature, on the original letter only, in another hand: "Dyed 29 Febr. following". John Whitgift died on 29 February 1604, eleven days after the date of this letter.
