Title
Letter from the Dean of Salisbury, John Gordon, about Mr Hyde's lease
Date
1603-1619
Quantity & Format
1 sheet
Description
Letter addressed "To the Right Worshipfull & Reverend my very loving brethren of the Chapter at Sarum".
The letter is much damaged by decay; a number of small areas are missing; it has been mounted on modern paper.
After a salutation in Latin ("Carissimi in Cristo fratres") the Dean writes briefly about "any thinge interesting of Church affairs" and refers to a [Reverend?] "Thornebury" (possibly Giles Thornborough, Subdean 1599-1637). He says he has written to a Dr Wilkinson "to putt the seale of my office to the confirmation of a lease made by [Reverend?] Hide "one of the Prebbends of [Hatesbury?]", apparently relating to property in Tytherington and Horningsham.
(Possibly a reference to Thomas Hyde, Chancellor of Sarum and a Canon Residentiary, 1588-1618; Rector of Sutton Veny, 1613-1618, but not recorded as a Prebendary of Heytesbury.
Signed "Your lovyng brother, John Gordon (for whom see also CH/20/75).
