Letter from Sir James Ley about the Manor of Beaminster, 1608
Date
25 Dec 1608
Quantity & Format
1 sheet
Description
Letter addressed from "Westbury this 25th of December 1608" by Sir James Ley (c1552-1629), judge and several times MP for Westbury.
No address, but presumably to the Dean and Chapter. The letter concerns a tenancy or tenancies involving the Manor of Beaminster; one "James Bale Lessee" is mentioned.
There is to be a meeting in Shaftesbury on "the fourth of January next" at "the sign of the George"; "I . . .wish that your Attorney or Agent may be present for the better effecting the business".
It appears that by September 1609 this issue had developed into a lawsuit between Beaminster tenants and the Church (see CH/20/85).
