Description
Letter addressed from Westbury on 7 September 1609 by Sir James Ley (c1552-1629), judge and several times MP for Westbury.
The tenants of Beaminster want a meeting about "the cause between the Church and them" to be at Shaftesbury, "but I understand that you expect it should be at Sarum". Sir James asks that the meeting be at Westbury on 21 September 1609.
Sir James Ley had written to the Dean and Chapter in December about an issue concerning the manor of Beaminster, with the imtemtion of avoiding a lawsuit (CH/20/82); it now seems that a lawsuit is being pursued.
