Letter signed by Charles II "at our Court at Whitehall", 12 Mar 1670 (1669 Old Style), "To Our Trusty and Wellbeloved Ralph Brideoak Doctor in Divinity and Deane of Our Cathedrall Church of Sarum". The late Dean, Richard Bayley, granted a lease of the Manor of Stratford Dean for three lives to the executors of the late Riched Hill, which has "since passed . . . for a valuable consideration unto Gyles Lydcott Esquire who now desiring your confirmation thereof you make difficulty to doe it in respect of a Letter from Our late Royal Father of blessed memory signifying his pleasure to the Clergy not to let their Lands for above One and Twenty years and not for lives. At the humble reuest of the said Gyles Lydcott, and in regard he hath not onely paid the full value for the said Lease but also settled his Wifes Joynture upon the said Manor, Wee are graciously pleased to recommend his case unto you, hereby impowering and authorizing you to grant unto him the said Gyles Lydcott a new Lease of the said Manor of Stratford Deane for three lives upon such reasonable terms as you two shall agree, the forementioned Letter from Our said Royall Father or any other Letter, Order or Direction from Our Self to the contrary Notwithstanding." The "Gyles Lydcott" referred to may be Giles Lytcott (1633-1696), sometime Comptroller General of Customs. Some text missing where the paper is worm-eaten.
