Description
Letter signed by Charles II "at our Court at Whitehall", 24 July 1674, "To Our Trusty & Welbeloved the Deane and Chapter of Our Cathedrall Church of Sarum".
"Whereas humble Suit hath been made to Us in favour of Our Trusty and Wellbeloved Daniel Whitby Doctor in Divinity and Chantor of Our Cathedral Church of Sarum, That considering hs is bound to perpetuall residence though he have noe house allowed him . . . Wee have accordingly thought fitt (being otherwise assured of the Orthodox Learning, Loyalty & Piety of him the said Daniel Whitby) hereby to recommend him to you in the most effectual manner Willing and Requiring you to Elect him the said Doctor Whitby into that Canon Residentiary's place that shall first become vacant".
Daniel Whitby (1638-1726) was was a controversial theologian and biblical commentator, an advocate of religious tolerance who published The Protestant Reconciler anonymously in 1682. He was Precentor of Sarum (1672-1726), a Canon Residentiary (1676-1726) and sometime Chaplain to Seth Ward.
