Description

Letter signed by Charles II "at our Court at Whitehall", 15 Jun 1676, "To Our Trusty & Wellbeloved the Deane (or in his absence the President) & Chapter of Our Cathedrall Church of Sarum". "Having received a good Testimony of the Sobriety, Loyalty & Orthodox Learning of Our Trusty and Wellbeloved Seth Ward, one of the Prebendaryes of that Our Church, and being informed That the Chapter or major Part thereof is well disposed for the receiving him into one of the Places of a Canon Residentiary of Our said Church, and whereas humble suit hath been made to Us to afford him Our Royal Recommendation, We having regard to the Interposition soe made in his Favour, have thought fit hereby very effectually to recommend him unto you, willing & requiring you immediately upon Receipt hereof to preelect the said Seth Ward into the next Place of Canon Residentiary that shall become void, in order to his being actually admitted into the same upon the first Vacancy". Seth Ward (1645-1690), nephew of Bishop Seth Ward, was Prebendary of Coombe and Harnham (1672-1681), and was to be Archdeacon of Wiltshire (1675-1681), Chancellor (1681-1687) and Treasurer (1687-1690).
