Description
Grant of rent for lives: John Capon (alias Salcott; d.1557; Bishop of Salisbury, 1539-1557) to Sir Edward Baynton (or Bayntun) (1480-1544) and his son Edward Baynton (or Bayntun) (1517-1593).
Rent of £40 arising from the Manor of Potterne in consideration for Sir Edward Baynton having surrendered the wardenship of the park of the Manor of Ramsbury, which had been granted to him for his life and that of his son by the previous Bishop of Salisbury, Nicholas Shaxton (c 1485-1556; Bishop of Salisbury 1535-1539).
Grant of rent dated 6 Mar 1540 (Old Style, i.e. 1541) with confirmation by the Dean and Chapter dated 11 Apr 1541.
Sir Edward Baynton of Bromham was vice-chamberlain to Henry VIII's second wife Anne Boleyn and was the brother-in-law of Catherine Howard, Henry's fifth wife. His son Edward was Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1571 and variouly MP for Wiltshire (1563), Devizes (1571) and Calne (1572).
