Description

Account Roll of the Manor of Potterne, 1375-1376. A roll of three membranes sewn together, with another two sewn membranes attached by a parchment tag and also another small additional piece. Largest document 120 x 26 cm. Badly stained and with a number of holes, possibly caused by fire; much barely legible. The previous archive catalogue transcribles the heading: "Compotus Walteri Whistle prepositi ibidem a festo Sciti Bertini anno regni regis Edwardi tertii xlix usque festum Sciti Michaelis prox. seq. anno superdicto." ("The accounts of Walter Whistle reeve from the feast of Saint Bertin (5 Sep) in the 49th year of the reign of King Edward III until the next feast of Saint Michael (29 Sep) in the year following the above mentioned"). "Whistle" may be a mireading for "Hickes": subsequent accounts for 1396 cite the Reeve as being one Walter Hickes (see CH/21/2/14/4).
