Description

Letter from Thomas Russel [Russell] to Thomas de Southam Canon of Salisbury concerning a rent and suit of court that he was said to owe for a tenement in Preshute. He has looked at the evidence of Oliver and Robert Russell his ancestors and examined old men and servants of his father Robert, who said that Robert his father never paid a penny in the name of rent to the vicar of the church of Preschuyt [Preshute], nor did any of his ancestors from time out of mind nor make suit of court as was related to him for any tenement in Preshute. In addition, he did not come to the land as an heir as Thomas de Southam wrote to him but from a gift and grant from his father. He begs from the bottom of his heart that he might be excused at present from the payment of the said [16s] and suit of court. And if it happens that he be held to his proposal then he will do what is necessary and pay everything which is deemed right. Written at Preshute.
