Description

Letters patent of King Edward, granting and giving licence to the vicars that for the augmentation of their commons by 1/2 d per day they could acquire lands to the value of £40 per year, notwithstanding the Statute of Mortmain. At Westminster, 23 May in the 10th year of his reign. The endorsement states that this is Edward III, and two other endorsements refer to Richard II and Henry IV. However, in the document itself it is not clear whether it is Edward II (and therefore dated 1317) or Edward III (1336); p.320 of Wordsworth, C. and Macleane, D., (eds.), Statutes of Salisbury Cathedral (London, 1915) states that it is Edward III 1336, whilst p.174 of Edwards, K., Salisbury Cathedral(Trowbridge, 1986) states that it is Edward II 1317. The paper catalogue states that this document was one of three to be handed to the Magister Munimentorum on behalf of the Vicars Choral by their Procurator in 1935 (a note attached to the item (now disposed of) stated 13 March 1935). See CO/VC/4/6/5.
