Description
Counterpart of a lease between the Procurator and Commonalty of Vicars of the Cathedral Church of Sarum on the one part and William Devereux of New Sarum draper on the other part. The Procurator and Commonalty of Vicars lease to the said William Devereux their messuage or tenement, hereditaments and premises with the appurtenances in the Close at the corner of the green near to the High Street Gate, and also their messuage or tenement, hereditaments and premises with the appurtenances in the Close adjoining the messuage and premises previously described on the north side, to have and to hold for 40 years. Both messuages or tenements and premises are bounded on the north by a messuage and premises belonging to the Dean and Chapter, and on the east and south by the highway leading from High Street Gate to the Cathedral Church and the green. The annual rent was 5 pounds, and two further yearly sums of 8 shillings and 8 shillings for land tax to be paid at the 4 feasts of the year, in addition to 130 pounds to convert the premises into one residence and repair it. Signed, sealed and delivered by William Devereux in the presence of Geo[rge] Harris clerk to Charles H Radcliffe solicitor in Salisbury. There is a coloured plan on the lease. The item is marked 'No 52 The Close' in pencil [modern hand?].
