Description

Lease for 40 years between the Procurator and Commonalty of the Vicars of Salisbury Cathedral and Bishop Seth Ward granting a garden within the Close of the Canons 98ft by 68ft, which adjoined another garden of the Vicars on which Thomas Hawles had built a stable on the east part and unto the wall on the west and unto the house and land late belonging to the said Thomas Hawles deceased now of Bishop Seth on the south part and upon a little lane on the north part. This garden was formerly 4 gardens. Also parcels of ground lying on the east and south parts of the lands late of Thomas Hawles and now of the Bishop (in the east 24ft and in breadth 8ft and 2 ft) on the south part of the parlour or dwelling house of Thomas Hawles on which land William Chambers had long since built certain outhouses and buildings. Also a garden plot in the Close on part of which Thomas Hawles had lately built a new stable. The garden and stable are bounded on the east with a brick wall, on the west and south with gardens and on the north with a lane leading by the porter's house). Also a parcel of garden or ground (36ft by 27ft, boundaries given including a new brick wall on the south). The yearly rent was 7 shillings for the garden which was formerly 4 gardens and for the ground where William Chambers had built outbuildings the rent was 3 shillings and a couple of capons, and for the garden and ground on which the new stable was built and other premises the rent of 4 shillings and 8 pence. On the reverse is written 'A Counter Parte of the Old Lease of the Vicars.'
