Description

Seth Bishop of Sarum and the Dean and Chapter state that 'we have found by late experience [that] [the] vicars of this Church by a pretended power given to [them] by [their] Charter, have leased out severall parcells of their estate; upon such terme as have not only b[een] injurious to some of their own brethren, but are of greate reproach to [the] Church, and may be of much great p[re]judice and disadvantage to their successors; And besides this allso, how contrary to [the] Lawes of this Land, and [the] laudable Customes of this Church demised severall of their options within [the] Close for 40 years, and one, in p[ar]ticular, ag[ainst] [the] expresse prohib[ition] of [the] deane [and] chapter, after full cognizance had of [that] business.' It goes on to say that the Bishop and Dean and Chapter reflected upon 'these miscarriages' and ordained the following: the Vicars Choral shall not grant any new leases or confirm or renew existing ones; they shall recall all grants which are judged to be revocable; they shall not let any part of their estate except for 1-3 years without the knowledge of the Dean and Chapter; the conditions and provisos of every lease granted hereafter shall be examined, allowed and approved by the Dean or his deputy and Chapter; every lease is to be examined and allowed shall be sealed in the Common Hall in the presence of the Commoner or one of the canons residentiary and the paper drafts should be approved by the Dean or his deputy; and that these constitutions and ordinances shall be observed and obeyed by the Vicars Chorall.
