Description
Letters relating to the curacy of Laverstock. It appears that the curate at the time (who had been there for 28 years), J P Greenly, was elderly (77) and unwell, and was to be replaced. Some of the letters discuss how Reverend Greenly might be supported. The file includes: letter to Reverend Canon H W Carpenter from the Ecclesiastical Commission dated 22 Mar 1901 re a payment from the Commissioners 'during the period in which only temporary arrangements are made for the Cure of Souls in the Parish'; letter from Francis Lear dated 6 Feb [18]89 re monetary support for Mr Greenly; letter to Reverend Canon H W Carpenter from John [Wordsworth, Bishop] dated 9 Mar 1889, in which he suggests that 'Mr Greenly give[s] up the entire spiritual charge of the Parish to Mr Bush'; letter to Reverend Canon H W Carpenter from the Ecclesiastical Commission dated 11 Dec 1900 re their payment of a stipend towards the remuneration of the curate of Laverstock following the death of Reverend J P Greenly; letter to Reverend Canon H W Carpenter from Messrs Clutton (agents to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England) dated 1 Apr 1901 enclosing their stipend for Laverstock Vicarage; a letter to the Reverend Canon Hutchings from John [Wordsworth, Bishop] dated 5 Feb 1889 re the present circumstances of the curacy of Laverstock and Mr Greenly; a proposal for the curacy of Laverstock which avoided the need to ask the present Curator [J P Greenly] to give up the priest-vicarship or the curacy; statement dated 11 Mar 1889 by Reverend J P Greenly that he will pay to Reverend H C Bush remuneration for the spiritual charge of Laverstock, witnessed by Harry W Carpenter Procurator; a letter from Harry W Carpenter Procurator of the Vicars Choral dated 6 Mar 1889 re the Curate of Laverstock, J P Greenly; a copy of a Permission to Officiate at Laverstock to Reverend Herbert Cromwell Bush dated 12 Apr 1889; letter dated 11 Apr 1901 to Reverend Canon W H Carpenter of Salisbury from Messrs Clutton with the subject 'Laverstock' re the stipend from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The letters were originally housed in a paper packet marked 'Rev H. W. Carpenter The Close.'
