Description

Volume containing notes on the appeal from lay vicars for more stipend, probably all by Highmore Skeats, one of the lay vicars (lay vicars were assistants ‘to strengthen the Harmoney’ of the Choir). On the inside cover it is written, ‘This Book was found among the Effects of the late Mr Rob[ert] Barret one of the Lay Vicars of the Cathedral, by his Executor Rob[ert] Cary Corfe Esq[uire], by which means it came in to the possession of A. T. Corfe…’ The volume includes: ‘A Narrative of the Priest and Lay Vicars of the Cathedral Church of Salisbury June 24th, 1797’; an account of the dispute dated 1794; notes; abstracts of leases made by the Procurator and Commonalty; and a copy of Mrs Dulcebella Payne’s lease 1672. At the other end of the book, there are 2 additional sheets, one (loose) with a description of lease books, the other (previously pinned to the volume) being a receipt dated 2 Feb 1797 (both rehouesd in melinex). Following these are further statements, beginning as follows: ‘21st Dec[ember] 1793 I Highmore Skeats Lay Man of the Cathedral Church of Sarum was app[lied] to by the Rest of his Brethren the Lay Men, to signify a dissatisfaction in not Receiving more as a Stipend for attending the duty of the Church, [and] also to assist them in making Enquiries why it was not more…’
