Description
A collection of approximately 65 letters written by Canon Fletcher from his home in Salisbury (21 The Close and then 59 The Close) to Mr Fred Chapman, local historian, churchwarden and resident of Tideswell, Derbyshire. Canon Fletcher was vicar of Tideswell from 1900 to 1906.
The letters primarily concern matters relating to Tideswell as well as details of sales and reprints of 'A Guide to Tideswell and its Church' written by Canon Fletcher with the assistance of Fred Chapman's collection of Tideswell parish magazines, newspaper cuttings and photographs.
Of particular interest are occasional descriptions of life at Salisbury Cathedral including references to the Cathedral Library (Canon Fletcher was Cathedral Librarian from 1936 until) 1940), housing of refugees during World War II and a visit by Princess Beatrice in 1938 when she was shown the Cathedral's 1215 Magna Carta. There are also references to pamphlets on various aspects of the history of the Cathedral written by Canon Fletcher and the transfer of the personal library of Bishop Wordsworth to Liverpool Cathedral. The final two letters are addressed to Mrs Chapman following the death of her husband Fred.
Also included is the title page of 'A Guide to Tideswell and its Church, a letter to Mr Chapman from Reading University Library concerning Cressbrook Mill, and a letter from Buckingham Palace dated 28 March 1935 confirming that a message of congratulations would be sent to on the occasion of a Diamond Wedding celebration (presumably that of Canon Fletcher and his wife).
