Description
A manuscript copy of an entry in the Patent Roll of 22 Edward I (20 Nov 1293 - 19 Nov 1294) addressed to all marine authorities, sheriffs, and bailiffs, requiring that they protect and safeguard all men, lands, revenues and property belonging to any Cistercian abbey within their jurisdiction, in consideration that the abbots thereof yielded to the King half their income from the most recent tithing in subsidy of the Holy Land. With a list of 64 Cistercian abbeys.
The copy is certified to be in accordance with the original record by George Holmes, deputy of Richard Topham, Keeper of the Records of the Tower of London, and is endorsed "Examined the 20th February 1721 with the Record at the Tower of London", signed by Thomas Bolde and H(?) Templeman.
Richard Topham (1671-1730) was Keeper of the Records at the Tower of London from 1707 until 1730 and was MP for New Windsor; George Holmes (1662-1749) was an antiquary and Fellow of the Royal Society who acted as deputy to the Keeper of the Records from 1695 until his death in 1749.
