Description
"The humble petition of the Inhabitants of the Close . . . To the right honorable Ralph Lord Hopton Feild Marshall Generall of his Majesties Western Forces". (Ralph Hopton, 1596-1652; created Baron Hopton of Stratton, 1643; Commander of the Royalist Western Army, 1643-1646).
The petitioners note that Sergeant-Major Innes, who is "to commaund and governe" in Salisbury, is "of the Romish Religion"; they ask that Lord Hopton should "place in the said Cittie a Commaunder that will encourage and advance the true protestant religion against Poperie as also scismes and sects".
