Description
Testimonial by Henry James Matthew (1837-1898), Bishop of Lahore (1888-1898), for Rev Arthur Lewis, addressed to "the faithful in Christ to whom these letters shall come or in any wise concern", confirming that Lewis, of Queen's College, Oxford, had been licensed on 12 May 1880 by the then Bishop of Lahore "to officiate as a Missionary Minister in the Archdeaconry of Lahore".
Further, "the said Arthur Lewis has, as we believe, from that period up to the date of his leaving India, continued to officiate as such Minister and has lived discreetly and laudably nor hath he in the mean time done anything so far as we know or believe by which he hath incurred Ecclesiastical censure according to the Ecclesiastical Laws of the Church of England on which account we do by these presents commend him unto you".
The Bishop of Lahore who licensed Arthus Lewis in 1880 was Thomas Valpy French (1825-1891), who had been appointed to the new diocese of Lahore, which included all of Punjab and northwestern India, in 1870.
