Description

A collection of handwritten notes concerning the life and history of Saint Osmund. An introductory note (labelled 'preface') to the collection reads: These documents have been collected at various times since the year 1862, when the writer was asked by the well known antiquarian the late M. Patu de S. Vincent to procure what documents he could to illustrate the lives of the Saints of Normandy. The death of M. de St Vincent prevented the appearance of what would have been a lay work, but a smaller book 'Vies des saints du diocese de Seez in 2 vols 8° was brought out in 18[blank] by M. Bliu now Canon of Seez, to whom the writer gave all the documents which he had collected, nearly all that appear in the present little volume. M. Bliu was unwilling to encumber his work with any documents illustrative of this great benefactor to the Church of England; but with great generosity he has allowed the writer to have the use of them, and they are now printed in the hope, that others will make use of them in writing a history of St Osmund's life and times. The Reverend Mr Golbie S.J. has printed a short biography of four english saints among whom is St Osmund. The writer is glad to find that the learned father has found the following materials serviceable to himself. Bristol, August 24 1891 (Segue) An additional note explains that the notes were never published but were bequeathed to Salisbury Cathedral Library 'as they stand' in November 1899.
