Title

Sarum Processional Musical Notebooks by W.H. Ferguson

Description

A collection of musical notebooks written by W.H. Ferguson. Both DC/WF/1 and DC/WF/2 contain quite large collections of plainsong melodies. Generally speaking, one side of each ‘opening’ has ruled, 4-line staves on which plainsong melodies are written in Gregorian notation. The melodies are presented as fair copies written in black ink. They are annotated in pencil with variant readings. In DC/WF/1/1-8 the 4-line staves are in blue ink. The primary sources for the fair copies of the plainsong melodies are not recorded but may be the facsimiles: Graduale Sarisburiense, and, Antiphonale Sarisburiense / both ed. W. H. Frere. Certainly there are several references in the 1st book of this set to “facsim. antiphonale” or just “facsim.” Variant readings are noted in pencil; they come from a range of manuscript and printed sources, e.g. BL Harley 2942, BL Lansdowne 461; Processionale ad usum … ecclesie Sarum (1523), etc. The printed sources of the variant readings are recorded by title at the beginning of DC/WF/1/2 (Sarum Processional notebook II). Two books of this set have pencilled notes on liturgiology rather than music. Notebook II (DC/WF/1/2) has the following at the foot of page [49]: 17.8.16; this may be a date.
