Musical Notebooks by W.H. Ferguson
Description
A collection of musical notebooks written by W.H. Ferguson. Both DC/WF/1 and DC/WF/2 contain quite large collections of plainsong melodies. Generally speaking, one side of each ‘opening’ has ruled, 4-line staves on which plainsong melodies are written in Gregorian notation. The melodies are presented as fair copies written in black ink. They are annotated in pencil with variant readings.
Each book in set DC/WF/2/1-6 has the calendar for 1910 and for 1911 on the upper pastedown, a “Ready Reckoner … ” and “Post Office Information” on the lower pastedown. At least two of the books were purchased from A. Craymer, 82, Coleman St., and, 122, London Wall, E.C.
The 4-line staves are in black or blue/black ink. This set of books contains a large collection of Sequences, together with certain Mass Propers and a Tract. The melodies are annotated in pencil with variant readings found in a range of manuscript and printed sources, e.g. BL add ms. 17001, BL Lansdowne 462, Bodley ms. Hatton 3, Missale ad usum Sarum (1527). This set of books also contains extended copies, in Latin, of liturgical rubrics, etc.; these are written in a small, neat and clear hand. The last book in this set contains pencilled texts for the Requiem Mass plus notes on troped Kyries.
