Description
Recording of an Easter episode of Songs of Praise by the BBC held at Salisbury Cathedral and broadcast on 19 April 1987.
Presented by Roger Royle. Features: small section of scaffold on the top of the Spire; general scenes of the City and Close, Walking Madonna by Elizabeth Frink; Old Sarum; the Spire Appeal Office (where Appeal sweatshirts are available to purchase; Easter Garden. Filmed before the William Pye font was installed and wooden chairs still used as seating in the Nave. There is scaffold at ground level at The West Front Interviews with Clerk of Works Roy Spring (footage of him climbing out of the weather door to the top of the spire); Frank Simpson Assistant to the Chaplain at HMP Erlestoke; Pat Burgess founder of Riding for the Disabled at Wilton; the foundation stone window; choir (Richard Seal Master of the Choristers is not conducting the choir but rather the audience). Close up towards the end of Librarian Suzanne Eward. The organist of David Halls.
Includes a note from Leslie Atkins to Suzanne Eward '...my row of tenors was shown right at the end. It brought back many happy memories, but also how cold it was at the time!'
