Annual Accounts

Description

Most of the accounts are of the Clerks; however, among the earlier accounts are a few of the Masters (13 and 15), which appear to be the same as the Clerks' accounts. The early accounts run from Michaelmas to Michaelmas; later accounts run from 1st October to Michaelmas, and from FA/1/1/92 they run from October to October; then from December to December. They are divided into receipts and expenditure, the receipts being mainly for rents, but also earlier on for obits, legacies, fraternities, oblations, sales, etc. The expenses are for wages, stipends, purchases, payments for work on the Cathedral (often a very large section), repairs of tenements belonging to the Fabric, etc. Up to and including FA/1/1/12, there is a separate section for Mawarden Court, at Stratford sub Castle, which belonged to the Fabric. The accounts for the 1600s have been annotated by Mr F R Fisher, 19th century Clerk of the Works. Numbers 55 and 58-62 on the original listing have been isolated and assigned to a separate sub-sub-series. NB. Annual Accounts 1927 are missing; a note found with the accounts states that they were 'left at Chapter Meeting 9 May 1928.' Annual Accounts 1866-7 are also missing; a space was left in the reference numbers as it was believed that they would be found. The majority of the paper volumes are in a poor or very poor condition (the paper is brittle and torn, and loose in places; there are also some instances of ink corrosion). Many items have insect damage. The 19th century accounts are in good condition, however they have been tightly folded with the result that they are difficult to open.
