Title
Work Done in the Wyatt Era
Description
Items relating to work done under James Wyatt, who was employed by Bishop Shute Barrington in the 1780s. Wyatt completed a survey in 1787, after which a significant amount of work was done in the Cathedral, including the demolition of the belfry and the removal of the Beauchamp and Hungerford chantry chapels. This resulted in the closure of the Cathedral from 01 Oct 1789 until Sep 1792. For more information, see Brown, S., Sumptuous and Richly Adorn'd: the decoration of Salisbury Cathedral (1999), pp.43-46.
