Description

Correspondence and related papers primarily relating to works undertaken following the discovery that 2 inch x 2 inch iron bands originally built into the inner and outer faces of the Tower just below parapet level, and connected by anchor bars, passing through the thickness of the walls were heavily corroded, and causing damage to the masonry. In one place the outer bar had been wholly destroyed. A later bar, fixed on the surface slightly below the others, and believed to date from the time of Wren was also found to be corroding to a less extent The work proposed was to form a reinforced concrete ring around the gutter at the base of the Spire, the sealing of three of the stair turrets with reinforced concrete incorporated in the ring beam, and the provision of a stainless steel hoop round the Spire base, together with stainless steel straps round each of the stair turrets; and the removal of the existing iron band round the Spire just above the gutter. (Taken from notes and specification included in this file written by Lawrence Bond, October 1967). Contains primarily progress reports issued by the general foreman but also: documents on the operation of sonic bangs caused by supersonic transport on buildings and compression test results on concrete cubes; South Presbytery Triforium Roof; manufacture and delivery of stainless steel hoops by Strongwork Engineering Ltd; Report on Tower by A C Wallbridge, 29 July 1965.
