Description

Letters Patent of King Edward III to John Grogh and Walter atte Bergh, in return for 40s to give, in spite of the Stature of Mortmain, to the Dean and Chapter 11s 11d rent in New Sarum. To hold to them and their heirs, for providing daily bread, wine and light for all the chaplains wishing to celebrate the divine offices at the altar of St Thomas the Martyr in the Cathedral. Also for additional maintenance for two chaplains celebrating at said altar for the souls of the king's progenitors and of the ancestors of said John and Walter every day; and of the clerk serving said chaplains. Also for a chalice, books, vestments and other ornaments of the said altar to be provided by the Dean and Chapter. Witness: Thomas, son of the King 'Warden of England' [Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester] at Westminster.
