Description
Copy of two Letters Patent. The first is dated 5th February 1423: the King having heard that the stone belltower standing almost in the middle of the Cathedral was in danger of ruin and, unless it was quickly repaired, would shortly fall down, completely destroying the Cathedral, gives licence to the Dean & Chapter to hold lands, tenants and rents, except for lands etc. held of him in chief, and also advowsons of churches to the value of £50 pa, both to help with the above repairs and to maintain divine shrines for his soul and the souls of the donors of lands. Notwithstanding the Statute of Mortmain. The second is dated 4th February 1444: the King, at the instance of Adam Moleyns, Dean of Salisbury and Keeper of the Privy Seal, gives himself to the Dean and Chapter to hold lands and tenants, not held in chief of the King, to the value of £20 per annum, to hold in free alms, notwithstanding the Statute of Mortmain. Given at Westminster.
