Description

Letters Patent of Edward II. The King mentions the suit of Reymund, Dean of Salisbury, and Chapter. When Simon de Migham had been Dean there had been a dispute between him and the Chapter on the one side, and Richard Abbot of Cirencester and the Convent on the other, over tithes of the forests, the Dean and Chapter claiming all the tithes of the forests of Wiltshire, Berkshire and Dorset, and the Abbot and Convent claiming some of the tithes of Windsor Forest by reason of the church of Bray which they held. This dispute had been settled, and certain metes and bounds agreed on, and laid down in a mandate of Edward I, to mark the area claimed by the Abbot and Convent. But now Adam, the present Abbot, with several others, had transgressed these bounds and carried off titheable corn, cattle etc from Le Frith, in Windsor Forest to the value of £40. The King now appoints Gilbert de Ronbury, Henry [Henrinco] de Staunton, Henry le Scrop and John de Wescote to hold an inquisition on the spot, taking the oaths of loyal men, and hearing and determining the said transgression. Given in London.
