Description
Accounts of payments from cars to use the car park and outgoings in relation to the manning of the car park and upkeep of the Close roads and paths. A note at the beginning of the volume records that the car park was opened [?] on 20 August 1928 and that the first years accounts were kept by Mr Messenger, (Clerk of Works). Attached to the inside front cover is the following printed notice, dated 9th July 1929, issued by Bishop John Randolph: 'I wish to bring before the ratepayers a proposal for a change of system in regard to the upkeep of the roads within the Close. It appears to me that the present method is both wasteful and unsatisfactory in its results. After going into the matter carefully and with expert advice I have ascertained that by a capital expenditure of a few hundred pounds the roads could be reconditioned in such a way as to reduce the cost of maintenance for the next ten years or more to an almost negligible sum and that by this means we should get rid of the dust nuisance which is becoming intolerable. The Dean and Chapter are prepared, if the rate playerss wish it and under certain circumstances, to provide thecapitall outlay and the cost of future maintenance out of the Motor Car Park fund. But this would mean the transfer to them of the functions and powers nowcommitted to the Way Wardens. If this were done a further saving in the cost of the labour would be effected as the care of the green, roads, and verges would all be under the same authority...'
