Description

A record of the income from donation boxes in the Cathedral - the funds earmarked primarily for the maintenance of the fabric. Recorded is the date the box was emptied and the amount it contained. Each entry is initialled. Other boxes and income recorded: Infirmary Box; income from the sale of postcards (28 June 1936 to 2 July 1969); the Music Fund; income from brass rubbings (from March 1968). Occasional weddings and funerals are also mentioned. Note regarding the launch of an Appeal Fund in April 1967 after which Appeal Fund boxes are entered in red ink. A note on 15 October 1939 made by Canon Quirk records 'On this night thieves entered the Cathedral, broke open the boxes, and took away the money found in them (the boxes had been cleared the day before at 6pm)'. A further note on 28 October, also by Canon Quirk, reads 'Total for Sept at beginning of War £55.14.1: but for the burglary on Oct 15, this total would have been slightly higher'. Other burglaries are recorded on 18 May 1947 and 15 June 1954. The beginning of a 10p admission charge from 15 April 1974 is noted. In later years chaplains' expenses also appear to be recorded.
