Description

Ink drawing, annotated thus: "Remembrance of the Altar Screen of the Cathedral removed in 1779 to St Martin's Church seen in 1825 by Eliz[abe]th Wickins [sic], drawn by her Aug[us]t 23 1866 Aged 79". There are other annotations which are either illegible or too faded to read. The drawing is of a barrel-vaulted crypt-like structure of three bays mounted on a plinth or stylobate, in which there are what appear to be openable panels or doors. It does not resemble any known altar screen, and there is no known record of such a screen being removed in 1779. (The original thirteenth century stone pulpitum, or quire screen, was removed to the North East Transept by James Wyatt in 1789, and does not resemble the structure shown in this drawing). Above the vaulted structure shown in the drawing is a swag-like motif, also in three sections corresponding to the three vaults below.
