Description
The date of the latest book in the catalogue appear to be 1868. Inscription inside front cover 'The notes and corrections written with a blue pencil appear to have been made by (Sir) E Maunde Thompson when he was helping in preparing the printed catalogue of 1879'. A separate note on the opposite page reads 'The paper on which this catalogue is written bears date 1864. It is therefore subsequent to Beriah Botfields Catalogue of 1849', followed by a list of four previous librarians. It appears to be an alphabetical list of works in English, exclusive of other languages. This volume has been sadly damaged by proximity to the hot-water tank which was disastrously overheated when it was first put it in February 1930, the automatic escape being out of order'. Information recorded: author, title, size, place and date of publication with the shelf mark recorded in brackets after the main entry. On one page a separate sheet 'Titled Books Given by Bishop Gheat' has been attached by Arthur Russell Malden but the list only comprises of five titles. Two loose sheets have been inserted at the back on page which did not originally belong to this volume. They are: 'Summary of the number of volumes contained in Salisbury Cathedral library 1906(Nov) to 1912 noted by S M Lakin with later notes by A R Malden: 'Errata & Corrigenda for the Printed Catalogue 1880' in the handwriting of S M Lakin.
