Description
List of books arranged by 'compartment' i.e. the book's location. An inscription on the inside front cover reads 'The catalogue of books on Salisbury Cathedral library (chiefly the printed volumes) arranged approximately in alphabetical order appears to be the duplicate kept by the Librarian (Rev J Greenly, RN) to which Beriah Botfield referred to on p405 of his Notes on the Cathedral Libraries of England 1849. Though not actually 'compiled' by Mr Greenly it is a transcript from the 1816 catalogue which is extant, a small folio, bound in smooth brown calf, a volume which there had many blank pages which were subsequently filled (from the reverse end) with a list of the books in the library as they had been placed upon shelves in book cases A-Z, set between the 9 windows or underneath the windows. At a still later period the bequest of Dean H Parr Hamilton's books occasioned the provision of a bookcase at right angles to the south window in 1880 and this has been followed by the addition of other central book cases, 1901'. A note on the first leaf listing the 'compilers or our present liturgy...May 1549' plus a couple of further sentences. There a number of notes at the start of the list of books including: 'Copy of the Catalogue of the Cathedral Library Salisbury built by Bishop Jewel, Books given to Ch by Bishop Guest', and 'The books marked with + 'W' or 'wood' after are bound in wooden boards and full of bookworm therefore removed by Mr Fisher into the Cope Chest in the Vestry' and a list of three books removed from the Cathedral School Library in 1918. The main catalogue records the date, title, place of publication, size and shelf mark (split into 3 sections named Compartment, Shelf, Book). most books dated 16th and 17th centuries although there are a few later - latest seems to be 1821 and therefore the catalogue is likely to date from the 19th century. There is also a rough pencil list of manuscript numbers. and what appears to be the start of a alphabetically list of books. List of presentations by Bishop Thomas Burgress, Bishop of Salisbury in 1827 (two volumes only). Further notes and lists at the reverse including 'books, wanted in Lib' and an ink drawing of the arms of Richard Pinson[?] 1483. Loose pages: notes of numbers of volumes in each compartment written in pencil of the back of a letter from university college Southampton, 1931.
