Description

A slim tall volume in which the documents are listed as being stored in presses and drawers. Boxes within each drawer are given a letter and number reference number eg A1, A2. At the beginning of the volume there are a number of later leaves subsequently bound up with Paynter's list. The lists of documents on these later leaves are the work of Mr E Maunde Thompson in 1875 and include various additional lists such as a list of Chapter Act Books (Press II), bound volumes in Press II, list of place names appearing in the 1649 parliamentary surveys, choristers account rolls, list of Prebends (Press III). There are also later alphabetical indexes on pages 93-98 in Maude Thompson's handwriting, including lists of: inhibitions, petitiones, deeds by place names, dispensations, and wills. Affixed to the back board is a printed plan of the stalls in the Quire with each stall labelled by prebend. Some notes and annotations are likely to be by Canon Christopher Wordsworth. There are three loose items inserted inside the front board: a letter dated 29th May 1884 regarding the borrowing of a lease of Preshute Vicarage by Mr Bush, Clerk of Works, a printed information sheet dated circa 1960 regarding arrangements to consult the 'Cathedral Records' at the Diocesan Record Office, and a note dated December 1670 regarding a rough draft of a chapter act. NB catalogue of the contents of the Fourth Press, see 1875 catalogue.
