Description

This folder contains three items: (1) A sketch book compiled in 1927-28 by David E Vaughan LIFA illustrating heraldic devices in Salisbury Cathedral. Vaughan was at this time art-master at Southport College. There is a alphabetical index of names which references 11 colour hand-drawn pages of heraldic shields and other elements relating to the following: the Hungerford Chantry, the Hertford Monument, Sir Richard Mompesson and Dame Katherine, 'Shields in the Windows', 'On wall, pavement, monuments' (5 items). (2) A hand-drawn and painted illustration of an 'augmentation' re-granted by Henry VIII in 1536 to Edward Seymour with a note recording that it was given to Canon Christopher Wordsworth by Hatcher on 25 October 1927. (3) Letter dated 4 Oct 1944 to L Bullock from Canon Robert Quirk describing sources on the heraldry in Salisbury Cathedral (including the sketch book by David Vaughan included here). The folder itself is labelled 'D E Vaughan's Coloured Illustrations 1928' on the spine and 'Salisbury Cathedral Heraldry by David E Vaughan 1928 (Southport)' on the cover. A library bookplate is affixed to the inside of the front cover on which is written Cr W. ie Christopher Wordsworth.
