An account of Salisbury Cathedral bell tower written by J R Jerram based on his research. Illustrations include: printed line drawing of the bell tower by J R Jerram; the sixth bell (and its inscription) which was transferred to the Cathedral tower in 1790; plan of the bell tower foundations; sketch plan of arrangements for tolling the bell near the North Transept; and section of the lower part of the bell tower Also included is a description of the bells in the Cathedral in 1917 and an extract from Ceremonies and Processions of Salisbury Cathedral (Wordsworth, 1910) relating to the altarists' duty in 1475 to ring the bells, and an extract from the Cathedral statutes (1319) concerning the ringing of bells.
Two loose sheets: a drawing of the tenor bell now hanging in the Cathedral tower and a 1932 newspaper cutting entitled 'Bells, Belfries and Bell-ringers'.
An inscription, above the Cathedral library bookplate, is written as follows on the inside of the front board: 'Presented to the Dean & Chapter of Salisbury Cathedral by J.R. Jerram, Octr 1917.' Also recorded is the following preface 'The following notes concerning the old Campanile of Salisbury Cathedral (which was pulled down towards the end of the eighteenth century) and the bells contained therein, have been collected from various sources. Unfortunately no records of the inscriptions on the bells, sold at that time, appears to have been preserved'.
