Description

A Fasti of a list of events organised chronologically. The inscription in the front of the book reads 'Finding the need both (a) of a section dealing with the past history of the Library, and (b) of a record to be kept of present events of importance to the Library, I began this book in February 1943' signed Robert Quirk, librarian and Treasurer. Contains: list of library related events 1940-1947 with additional entries for 1949, including details of new accessions: chronological details of the 'Restoration to the Cathedral and Library of treasures removed to places of safety during the World War 1939-4' includes references to books, manuscripts and objects stored at Westwood Quarry, Bradford upon Avon and vaults of Wiveliscombe Church Somerset (with notes on condition on return): a further list of damage to the manuscripts 'Schedule of plight of the MSS Oct 1945': list of items removed to the Public Record Office on 7th Nov 1945 including Magna Carta 'to be flattened and mounted', note that Magna Carta was returned 31st Jan 1946: details of books displayed in an exhibition 1946 at the Festival of the Friends 'in honour of the quincentenaries' of the Library (which fell a year ago, but could not be celebrated ten owing to the war)': list of books in exhibition in 1947 at the Festival of the Friends. Amongst the last entries are obituaries for Canon Quirk who died in 1949 in the form of newspaper cuttings followed by a handwritten testimony to Canon Quirk by Dr Elsie Smith. One loose sheet concerning relocation of Magna Carta to the Muniment Room.
