Various handwritten notes and photocopies relating particularly to historical sources for the history of the Cathedral library and archives. Includes: photocopied extracts from selected published histories of the Cathedral; photocopy and transcript of a document held by the National Archives (reference E/28/78/11) concerning the donation of thirty oak trees from the Royal forests for use in the library in 1444/45; two letters dated 1978-1979 from The Very Reverend Patrick R Mitchell, Dean of Wells Cathedral to Dean Sydney Evans concerning the borrowing of book by the Dean of Salisbury from Wells Cathedral in the 1200s; a note dated 23 Sep 1997 from Roy Dixon recommending that the Library is not made more accessible to the public; extracts from Chapter act books relating to the library and archives; including a transcript of the entry for 15 January 1444/45 recording the decision to build a library and accompanying schools; papers relating to the supposed claim that Bishop Jewel founded the Cathedral library including reference to an inscription in E.5.8; transcript of extract from Bishop Geste's will dated 10 April 1577 in which he bequeathed all his books to the Cathedral library; details of donations from Dean John Gordon (1618) and Canon Chancellor Thomas Hyde (1618); extract form Archbishop Lauds' Visitation to Salisbury in 1634; extract from Lease Book 1670-1675 recording the gift of book from Dr Watson (photocopy of document in Press III 'Dean & Chapter'); transcript of extract from Bishop Seth Ward's will and from the wills of Izaak Walton (1683) and Isaac Walton (1720); family tree and accompany notes for the Walton, Ken and Hawkins' families; transcript of extract from a manuscript at Longford Castle dated 1780 describing the organisation of the Library, listing three manuscripts 'I thought most valuable' (includes MS150), and giving a description of the coats of arms on the Library windows in January 1732/3 - possibly originating from a notebook belonging to A Malden; account of proceedings in the Bishop's Consistory court in 1630 concerning the Tythes of Alderbury (Godstone v Dove) - the evidence includes a description of the process of the recording of the acts of Chapter; 'The Library and Theological Lecture Room Over the East Cloister Walk Some Brief Notes' Tim Tatton-Brown, Apr 1995; reference to the quote by Sir Thomas Phillips recorded in Wiltshire Notes and Queries Vol VI page 149 describing the 'free ingress and egress' of jackdaws through the broken library windows in about 1820); some lists of donors of manuscripts and printed books; list of 'Keepers of Cathedral Library'; list of Clerks of Works compiled 1932 including notes of key work and severe weather from 1220; notes on contents of Box 94 (Press I Miscellaneous Volumes) particularly re Dean Pierce, the Gillo family and the seventeenth century cathedral; newspaper cutting from the Salisbury Journal on the 500th anniversary celebrations of the Cathedral library in 1945/46 - the author (D G Haggett) particularly notes the interest in the library by American service men although they 'are disappointed that the oldest treasures are not at present in the Library, having been placed in safety for the period of the war, particularly the contemporary copy of Magna Carta...Mr H Messenger's photograph shows the facts, but lacks the enchantment of the actual document'; notes and extracts from Mr Fisher's notebooks.
