Description
A loose-leaf file or album used as a scrap-book containing mainly press-cuttings sourced from a professional cuttings service and therefore capturing material from a wide range of newspapers nationwide.
Principal topics referred to include:
controversy about the Chapter House windows (Jan 1967);
the laying-up of the Colours of 4th Battalion the Wiltshire Regiment, TA (Mar 1967);
launch of an appeal for £250,000 for general repairs (Mar 1967), fund-raising for which included the "Salisbury Triumph", a week-end of attractions including a re-enactment of a jousting competition, television appeals supported by singers Nina and Frederik and by cricket commentator John Arlott (May & Dec 1967) and the issue of a commemorative plate by Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd (Mar 1968);
York Minster's appeal for £2 million (May 1967); and
the Southern Cathedrals Festival (Jun 1967) and Salisbury's first Festival of the Arts (Jul 1967).
Inserted in an envelope at the back of the file was an article from "The Field" of 23 Nov 1967, "The anatomy of a cathedral" by Donald Coggan, Archbishop of York, being "a survey into why Britain's greatest churches need money" and focussing on "A case history at Salisbury" with photographs, some in colour, of the Cathedral and surroundings and of the work being carried out in connection with the 1967 appeal. Together with some additional "Clippings relating to Cathedral but not to appeal" this is now housed in a separate folder.
