Description

A purpose-made scrap-book with a coloured design on the cover with a banner heading, "Cathedral Scrap Book". The book contains mainly press-cuttings with some illustrations and material from other printed sources, all relating to the history, features and contents of the Cathedral and to people associated with it. Most items have been glued to the pages of the scrap-book but some are inserted loosely. Contents and principal topics referred to include: the felled "Waterloo" elms turned into planks for wood working purposes (1976); "the unholy planning row over Salisbury cathedral car-park" (1984); the installation of Elisabeth Frink's "Walking Madonna" (1981); "Save our Spire Day" at Salisbury racecourse, attended by HRH The Prince of Wales (1986); the retirement of Dean Sydney Evans (1986); "an antique and art auction at Wilton House has raised at least £80,000 for the Salisbury Cathedral Spire Appeal" (1986); the appointment and installation of Hugh Dickinson as Dean of Salisbury (1986); visit of HRH The Prince of Wales to see the Parishes of the Diocese present purses for the Cathedral Spire Appeal (1986); the new display of Magna Carta in the Chapter House (1983); the conversion of the College of Sarum St Michael into residential flats, and speculation that Edward Heath might acquire a long lease on Arundellls (1985); visit of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother for the 700th anniversary of the consecration of the Cathedral (1958); installation of William Fenton Morley as Dean of Salisbury (1971), and his retirement (1977); installation of Sydney Hall Evans as Dean of Salisbury (1977); installation of John Baker as Bishop of Salisbury (1982); arson attack on the Cathedral (1983; "Magna Carta Safe" reported The New York Times); the creation, in aid of the Spire Appeal, of a model of the Cathedral as it would have looked about half way through its construction, in about 1240, by Jim Mogford (harpsichord maker) and John Ogg (eye surgeon) (1987); a profile of Edward Rutherford, author of the novel Sarum,which he dedicated ,"To Salisbury Spire" (1987); dedication of a memorial to artist Rex Whistler, killed in Normandy in 1944 (1987); Christine Farrington, the first woman to join the clergy staff of the Cathedral (1987); visit of HRH The Prince of Wales to lay the first stone of the spire restoration project, when he climbed to within about 50 feet of the top of the spire (1987); visit of HRH The Princess Royal, president of the Save the Children Fund, to give the New Sarum Lecture, "Is International Aid Really Helping Anyone?"
